Everything I Need

For anyone who had a dream that just wouldn’t die.

Sunday, December 11 – 3pm & 8pm at Alumnae Theatre – Studio

(Toronto)Everything I Need is Devon Hubka’s first solo show and her first work as a writer. It’s the show she’s been meaning to write for years – the phrase “That’s going to go in my show” was used often.  But aside from constantly scribbling in notebooks, it didn’t happen. Then a respected industry professional stoked a fire by telling Devon that she didn’t have “it”.

Determined to prove him wrong, and prove to herself she could follow through with her dream of writing her own solo show, Devon threw herself into the ring and submitted to the Toronto Fringe Festival for the first time.  She won the lottery (literally), and finally wrote that show.  Everything I Need premiered in the Toronto Fringe summer of 2013, and garnered enthusiastic reviews for Devon’s “warmly appealing personality and a big lush voice born to sing show tunes”.

“It was the best first time an actor could ask for.  And I never thought I would perform it again”, Devon admits.

Three years later, the universe again pulled Devon’s name out of a hat, and the opportunity arose to remount the show.  With a newly-edited and revised script (honed by dramaturge PJ Hammond and director Marcia Bennett, who both worked on the Fringe production), Everything I Need will be showcased in the Studio at Alumnae Theatre on December 11, 2016.  Stage manager is David Liotta, also returning from the Fringe.

Everything I Need incorporates song and dance (choreographed by Tyrell Witherspoon), and its taut 60 minutes are filled with stories about how Devon thought her career was supposed to be, and how – when it seems that nothing has turned out the way it was supposed to – it still makes for a wonderful life.

“Writing this show made me take stock and understand why all the best things in my life happened when I was just being myself,” Devon says. “You really can end up having everything you need. Some dreams just take a little longer to achieve.”

DEVON HUBKA is a singer/actor who is conversational in American Sign Language.  Everything I Need marks her first work as a writer.  Favourite credits include the title role in Stellaluna (U.S. tour), Izzy in Rabbit Hole (The Works Department/Toronto Fringe), and anytime she’s asked to sing or sign anywhere.
MARCIA BENNETT (Director) is a Dora-nominated actor, director, acting coach and teacher. Among her many TV/film highlights are the role of May Silverstone in the award-winning series, Slings and Arrows; the demonic school teacher in The Woods; and the supporting role of Lydia in the highly honoured hit of multiple 2014 film fests, Nocturne.  Upcoming films include Cardinal and Our House, to be released in 2017.  She teaches at Lewis Baumander Acting Studio, and served as the director of the premiere production of Everything I Need in the 2013 Toronto Fringe Festival.
